A Spa Director’s Wish List: What the Perfect Spa Facility Would Look Like

We’ve all played that game of…what would I do if I won the lottery, right? We’d all buy a fancy new sports car, that big mansion in a gated community, and take an extravagant vacation to some far off, exotic locations, right? Well, spa directors play that game too, but it’s called…what would I do if I had the perfect spa facility? What would it look like? What kinds of treatments would be offered? What would the people be like who worked there? These are the kinds of things spa directors’ dream of, so let’s take a look at what the perfect spa facility would look like from the point of view of the spa director.

What would the spa look like? While there are small day spas and large day spas, size doesn’t really matter as long as you have all of the essential elements, no matter what size building the spa happens to be in. People go to a day spa to get some well-deserved rest and relaxation from their busy daily lives. So, the first thing that a day spa should offer is a comfortable and quiet location for people to truly be able to take a break and enjoy some soothing “me” time. This means having light and airy colors painted on the walls, perhaps even some murals that bring to mind the feeling of being on an exotic tropical island resort or a quiet country estate. The lights should be soft and dim to create an atmosphere of calm. Each room would have lots of very comfortable, cozy chairs, perhaps with lots of pillows or overstuffed cushions. From the moment you walked into this “perfect” spa, it would feel inviting, relaxing, and create the impression that the worries and problems of the outside world no longer exist.

The reception area should be warm and welcoming and would almost pull the clients in and make them feel like they belong there. There would be plenty of private spa treatment rooms where clients could really focus on the work being done and easily drift away into that Shangri-La that only a great full-body massage can bring. Let’s not forget about the locker rooms either. This often overlooked detail is very important for clients who want to be able to fully relax knowing that they can undress in privacy while also being able to store their important belongings in a safe and secure locker. The dressing rooms would have individual showers, plenty of fresh towels, personal robes and slippers, and it would be obsessively cleaned at all times. While this doesn’t seem like the most glamorous part of the spa, never underestimate the importance of clean toilets!

There would also be large rooms for groups to enjoy their rejuvenating treatments together, the perfect spot for bridal parties or baby showers to be held. There might even be a special couple’s room that could help reignite passions and reconnect couples who are looking for a very special and very romantic spa experience together. The relaxation room would provide several relaxing lounge chairs, soft music, aromatherapy candles, and herbal teas for clients to just “chill” in before and after their spa treatments.

Speaking of the treatments, the best day spas offer a wide variety of treatments that appeal to a wide range of people with varying interests and tastes. The perfect spa would, of course, provide the classic treatments that have made day spas so successful. This would include therapeutic massages, facials, sea salt body rubs, detoxifying body wraps, and even manicures and pedicures. The spa would also provide some more exotic or treatments for those who want to take a walk on the wild side and experience something incredibly relaxing, yet uniquely different. This might include hot stone massage, reflexology, Thai massage, Watsu, or yogalates. If there was enough space in the spa director’s perfect spa, there would also be a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, and perhaps even a lap pool!

What about the people who work at the spa? What would they be like? The perfectly designed spa would be nothing without the perfectly selected spa employees to run it. The receptionist would have to be a master of customer service relations. Whenever you’re dealing with the public, you have to remember that the world is full of all kinds of people with all kinds of needs. It takes a professional who is knowledgeable in all aspects of the spa’s services and able to communicate with clients in a friendly and respectful way. The therapists and estheticians would need to be highly trained professionals who are experts in their field of therapy. Clients know a fake when they see one, so having a staff that is highly trained in their particular specialty is essential to any spa’s overall success. Finally, the spa management staff would need to be educated, experienced, and talented leaders who love the spa industry and all that it has to offer. They would be great business people, love working with the public, and enjoy the ever-changing challenges that working in the perfect day spa would provide.

While these spa fantasies might sound like a dream, they’re all perfectly within reach for any day spa director to attain. The spa industry is built on making people’s dreams come true, so creating the perfect day spa should be a snap for any talented spa director. A relaxing atmosphere, comfortable rooms, exciting and effective treatments, and a warm and friendly staff are all things that every spa director should shoot for in their own spas. So, dare to dream the impossible dream and make your spa the perfect spa!
