To Serve or Not to Serve? The Big Question about Alcohol in a Spa Setting is a Hot Topic of Debate

Serving alcohol in a spa setting can be a great way to help clients relax before and after their treatments, especially when it comes to couples, groups, or parties.  Offering a complimentary glass of champagne is often associated with high-end spas and can create that “good life” atmosphere.

However, serving alcohol in your spa may not be the best choice for your business or your clients.  The point of going to the spa is to unwind, so while serving alcohol may initially assist in the relaxation process, it can quickly go from relaxation to distraction.  Alcohol causes people to talk louder and disregard others which may cause drinking clients to become more boisterous, causing your non-drinking clients to become annoyed.

Alcohol acts as a depressant, which causes the body to relax, but add warm water or steam to the mix and this can result in dangerous consequences.  Soaking in the hot tub after drinking alcohol drink can cause dizziness, nausea, and lightheadedness.  Alcohol expands blood vessels and increases body temperatures, just as warm water or steam does.  This can result in lost consciousness, falling, heart attack, or even drowning.  So, keep alcohol at the bar and out of the spa!
